What we do

Buildable design input from an engineering perspective

DEW enhances consultant and contractor designs with practical, buildable MEP solutions (mechanical, electrical, public health and process systems) drawing on our engineering understanding of system installation, commissioning and maintenance in practical settings.

That scope runs from HVAC, power and lighting all the way through to above and below ground drainage, hot and cold water services, and the process pipework and systems found in industrial, energy and other highly regulated environments.

We review designs and coordinated models with a builder’s eye, identifying access issues, maintenance constraints and installation risks that can be harder to spot from a purely design-led perspective, all with our goal to spot issues before they become problems on site.

The result is a design that installs cleanly, performs as intended and can be maintained for the life of the building.

Emergency Department Extension

Overview

The Aintree Hospital Emergency Department Extension project aimed to enhance emergency care capacity and improve patient outcomes in a busy hospital environment. The project required precise MEP coordination to ensure seamless integration with existing infrastructure while minimising disruptions to ongoing operations.

Do you replace our existing M&E consultant?

No, we work alongside your existing consultant team rather than replacing them. Our role is to strengthen the design with practical, buildable input – catching risks and inefficiencies that can be harder to spot from a purely design-led perspective.

We can add value at multiple stages, but earlier is generally better - bringing us in during detailed design (RIBA Stage 4) gives the most scope to influence buildability and validate costs before decisions are locked in. That said, we also work on live projects already underway, reviewing existing designs and models to identify risks or savings that haven't yet been caught.

Yes. Public health is part of the same design support offer. That covers above and below ground drainage, domestic hot and cold water services and rainwater systems, reviewed with the same buildability and maintenance-access lens as the mechanical and electrical scope. Because these services are coordinated in the same BIM model, treating them together catches the interfaces - gradients, invert levels, plant space, etc - that can cause problems when disciplines are reviewed in isolation.

Process design support covers the process pipework and systems found in industrial, energy and other highly regulated environments, supporting consultant and contractor designs where process services have to coexist with building services in the same congested spaces. We bring the same practical focus centred around three key questions: can it be installed in sequence? Can it be commissioned safely? Can it be accessed and maintained once the facility is live?

Common findings include services routed through inaccessible voids, plant that can't be replaced without major strip-out, clashes between installation sequence and programme, and maintenance access that looks fine in the model but doesn't work with panels, doors and clearances in place.
